JEE 2027 Admission & Counselling Guide
A step-by-step walkthrough of the seat allocation cycle for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
Exam & Results Declaration
Candidates appear for the JEE Main (Session 1 & 2) and/or JEE Advanced exams. NTA declares shift-wise normalized percentile scores, and subsequently publishes the Final All India Rank (AIR) list based on the best of two JEE Main session percentiles. The top ~2.5 Lakh candidates qualify for JEE Advanced.
JoSAA Portal Registration & Choice Filling
All qualified candidates register on the official JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) portal. Here, candidates must lock their preferences for engineering colleges and branches. Option-filling is a critical step; candidates must enter choices in order of absolute preference, as reallocation only happens upward.
Mock Seat Allocation & Rounds
JoSAA releases mock seat allocations to help students gauge their probability. Next, actual seat allocation happens over multiple rounds (typically 5-6 rounds). When a seat is allocated, the candidate must choose one of three options: Freeze (accept and lock), Slide (accept but look for higher branch in the same institute), or Float (accept but look for higher branch/institute).
Document Verification & Seat Acceptance
Once a seat is accepted, candidates upload required academic and category documents (like Category Certificate, Class 10/12 marksheets, Medical Certificate) and pay the seat acceptance fee. Verification is conducted online by the virtual reporting center of the allotted institute.
CSAB Special Rounds (For NITs, IIITs & GFTIs)
After JoSAA rounds conclude, any vacant seats remaining in NITs, IIITs, and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) are filled via two CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) Special Rounds. CSAB rounds often see cutoffs drop, giving a second chance to students with lower percentiles.
📊 Category Reservation Quotas
Seat allocation in JoSAA and CSAB strictly adheres to Government of India reservation mandates:
* Note: A horizontal reservation of 5% is allocated for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) within each respective category. Supernumerary female seats (~20%) are created to improve gender diversity at IITs & NITs.
JoSAA & CSAB Counselling Roadmap 2027
A step-by-step breakdown of how seat allocation works from rank release to final campus reporting.
JoSAA Registration & Choice Filling
After JEE Advanced results, candidates register on JoSAA portal and submit their ordered list of preferred institute and branch combinations across 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 38 GFTIs.
Mock Seat Allotment (Rounds 1 & 2)
JoSAA releases two mock seat allocations to help candidates understand their seat probability based on current choice lists and refine their preferences before locking.
6 Official Rounds of Allotment
JoSAA conducts 6 main seat allocation rounds. Upon receiving an offer, candidates must choose between Freeze (accept & lock), Float (accept & upgrade anywhere), or Slide (accept & upgrade within same institute).
Online Document Verification & Fee Acceptance
Candidates must upload required certificates (12th Marksheet, Category Certificate, State Domicile proof) and pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) online.
CSAB Special Rounds (NITs/IIITs/GFTIs)
Vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after Round 6 are filled via 2 Special Rounds conducted by CSAB. Ranks up to 1,50,000+ often clear cutoffs in CSAB rounds.

Understanding NTA Normalization & Percentile Scores
How the National Testing Agency calculates multi-shift equi-percentile rankings to ensure complete fairness across paper difficulties.
The Official Mathematical Formula
The NTA Percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored EQUAL TO OR BELOW (same or lower raw marks) that particular candidate in that session:
- m: Number of candidates who appeared in the session with raw score ≤ candidate's score.
- N: Total number of candidates who appeared in that specific session.
- Percentiles are calculated to 7 decimal places to prevent tie clustering.
Shift Difficulty Balancing Example
Consider two aspirants taking exams of drastically different difficulty levels:
Scores 175 Marks out of 300. Because the paper was tough, 99.15% of candidates in that shift scored ≤ 175. Percentile = 99.1500000%.
Scores 208 Marks out of 300. Because the paper was easy, only 99.15% of candidates scored ≤ 208. Percentile = 99.1500000%.
Despite a 33-mark raw difference, both earn an identical percentile because normalization adjusts for shift difficulty.
Official NTA Tie-Breaking Rules
When two or more candidates obtain identical total NTA percentiles, ties are broken in this strict order:
- Mathematics Percentile: Higher NTA score in Maths receives higher rank.
- Physics Percentile: Higher NTA score in Physics.
- Chemistry Percentile: Higher NTA score in Chemistry.
- Accuracy Ratio: Higher ratio of correct answers to incorrect attempts across the paper.
- Subject-Specific Accuracy: Less incorrect answers in Maths, then Physics, then Chemistry.
- Age (Older): Candidate older in age is awarded the higher rank.
