All India Basis: IITs allocate all seats on an All India (AI) basis. There is no Home State (HS) quota for IIT campuses in JoSAA.

Female Supernumerary Seats & Seat Locking

IIT admissions in JoSAA contain special provisions to improve student diversity and help candidates manage their choice listings.

Supernumerary Female Pool

To increase female enrollment to at least 20%, IITs allocate additional supernumerary seats specifically for female candidates. The cutoffs for the female pool are significantly more relaxed compared to the gender-neutral pool. Female candidates are automatically evaluated for both pools.

Freeze, Float, and Slide Options

Once a seat is allotted in any JoSAA round, you must choose one of three options:
Freeze: Accept the allotted seat and lock it (you will not participate in subsequent rounds).
Float: Accept the seat but remain open to joining a higher preference course in *any* institute.
Slide: Accept the seat but remain open to joining a higher preference course in the *same* institute.

Admissions & Campus Choices at IITs

Securing a seat in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is the culmination of clearing the JEE Advanced. Because IITs are elite centrally funded institutes, JoSAA administers their seat allocation with strict national policies.

IIT Quota Allocation Policy

Unlike NITs and IIITs, which have Home State (HS) quotas, IITs allocate seats solely on an **All India (AI) Quota** basis. This means there are no regional state reservations. Every student competing for an IIT seat faces the same nationwide merit-based threshold, regardless of the state they reside in.

Branch Changes and Preparatory Listings

While some IITs allow a branch change at the end of the first year based on CGPA, several top IITs (like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras) have restricted or completely phased out branch changes to reduce student stress. Hence, choosing the right branch during counselling is vital.

🏛️
Top Tier 1 IITs (The Old 7)
IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Guwahati. Known for world-class global research reputation, top-tier campus recruitment, and alumni networks. CSE cutoffs usually close under AIR 300 to AIR 1,000.
👩‍🎓
Female Supernumerary Quota (20%)
To encourage gender diversity, 20% supernumerary seats are created across all IITs for female candidates. Female applicants are first evaluated in the Gender-Neutral pool; if unallocated, they compete in the Female-Only pool, resulting in significantly higher rank cutoffs!
🎓
4-Year B.Tech vs 5-Year Dual Degree
5-Year Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) programs often have 1,000 to 3,000 lower rank cutoffs than 4-Year B.Tech programs in the same branch at Tier 1 IITs, making them an excellent choice for students aspiring to study at top-tier IIT campuses.

IIT Predictor FAQs

Answers to common questions about female supernumerary seats, preparatory courses, and JOSAA seat allocation.

What are preparatory courses at IITs?
If seats reserved for SC, ST, or PwD candidates remain vacant after all rounds of allocation, IITs fill them with candidates from those categories who cleared relaxed score margins. These candidates undergo a one-year preparatory course at an IIT. Upon passing this program, they are registered directly into the first year of their regular B.Tech course.
How does the Female Supernumerary Quota work at IITs?
To improve gender balance, additional seats (usually 20%) are created at each IIT specifically for female candidates. This ensures that female candidates compete in a separate female-only merit pool if they are not allocated seats in the gender-neutral pool, resulting in significantly relaxed cutoffs.
Are IIT seats filled in CSAB Special Rounds?
No. CSAB special rounds are only conducted for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Any seat in an IIT that remains vacant after the final round of JoSAA counselling cannot be filled and is lapsed.
Can I change my branch after 1st year at IIT?
Historically yes, but several premier IITs—including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras—have formally discontinued or heavily restricted branch changes to relieve freshman academic pressure. Students should choose their initial branch assuming no branch change.
What is the advantage of 5-Year Dual Degree programs at IITs?
Integrated 5-Year B.Tech + M.Tech Dual Degree programs typically close 1,000 to 2,500 ranks lower than equivalent 4-year B.Tech programs in the same IIT, offering a strategic pathway into Tier-1 campuses like Bombay, Delhi, and Kharagpur.
Is there any Home State Quota in IITs?
No. All seats in all 23 IITs are allocated solely under the All India (AI) Quota. There is zero Home State or domicile reservation in any IIT.
